Finnmark & Northern Norway
Bobrikova & de Carmen, Åsne Eldøy, Ole Petter Ribe
Starting in the winter of 2017 artists Bobrikova & de Carmen, Åsne Eldøy and Ole Petter Ribe will be participating in three self-directed nomadic residencies. The residencies will take place in the North of Norway, spending time developing work within specific local contexts. An outcome of each residency will be a video that reflects in some way the time spent working nomadically.
Bobrikova & de Carmen
The new Finnmark, Expedition safeguarding Utopia
November - December 2017
Bobrikova & de Carmen have used the residency as an expeditionary journey. During the expedition the artists opened a consultation with Sami population asking the question; 'what would be the basis for creating a new open and evolving society that would allow people to create social and institutional forms within the Ecological Utopia.'
The residency acts as the starting point for a larger research project building a relationship with communities in the North of Norway. The video references the adventures and misadventures of the expedition recorded with low quality, accessible devices.
Åsne Eldøy: Akkarvik
Residency postponed until the house foundations are visible in the Spring
Åsne Eldøy is the heir to a piece of land, Fagertun, in the middle of the Akkarvik valley. Fragments of the foundations of a former building are left in the landscape, having never been restored after World War II. Akkarvik was one of the last villages that were burnt down when German troops pulled out of Norway in 1944-45. After the war, the inhabitants of Akkarvik and other small societies in crisis situations received help from the Norwegian government to rebuild their homes. However only 9 registered residents inhabit Akkarvik in what was once a 400 strong community.
For the residency Åsne will construct an installation within the foundations left in the landscape. The installation will act as a monument to relocation. The resulting film will build a timelapse that records the return of the house.
Ole Petter Ribe: The Preppers
Ole Petter Ribe will combine a fascination tradition and the modernisation through posing ethical questions about tourism, pioneering, globalization and industry in Northern Norway. Undertaking a road trip involving research on how to survive the North off season. Ole Petter will travel with his own campervan from Oslo up to the official counties of Nordland, Tromsø Finnmark searching for recipes on how to survive and move in the landscape.
The residency acts as a research project for a performance pilgrimage based on survival which will be undertaken in 2018. The resulting video will share the conversations and experiences from the research period.
